Patriarchs In Black – Visioning (Album Review) AtV October 13, 2024 Reviews Patriarchs In Black’s third album, Visioning, finds the band continuing to evolve but not without some missteps. Spearheaded by Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative) and Dan Lorenzo (Jersey metal veteran), the album features a rotating cast of guest vocalists, including Kyle Thomas (Exhorder) and Jason McMaster (Watchtower), bringing varied textures to the record. The band’s strengths lie in its solid stoner/doom/alternative sound reminiscent of the ‘90s, especially on tracks like “Before I Go” and the title track, which strike a perfect balance between heavy and melodic. However, the album occasionally stumbles when it veers into genres like NYHC, blues, or heavy metal, with songs like “Whiskey On My Mind” falling flat due to an awkward Southern rock influence. Despite these moments, the album exudes a laid-back, jam-session feel that reflects the musicians’ passion and love for experimentation. Tracks like “Curse My Name” stand out with raw energy and high-pitched screams from McMaster, providing a glimpse of what Visioningcould have been if it leaned more consistently into its heavier influences. While Visioning doesn’t fully capitalize on the potential of blending its influences, it offers an enjoyable experience for fans of East Coast doom and alternative metal. With a bit more cohesion, Patriarchs In Black could turn these diverse elements into a truly powerful and unique sound. For now, Visioningdelivers a solid, if uneven, listen that captures the spirit of metal veterans exploring new musical ground. 7/10 Album: Visioning Band: Patriarchs In Black Label: Metalville Distribution: Rouch Trade/ The Rock Online Release date: August 2024 Track list: EntryWhat Do They KnowBefore I GoHeart Of SpiteLow PriceWelcome To Hell AgainWhiskey On My MindEmpty CupCurse My NameA Few Good MenBirthVisioning
